I'm not sure if it's just the deluxe version, or the Japanese one (I have the deluxe Japanese copy) but 808s & Heartbreaks has crazy fucking nice. Run The Jewels deluxe edition or whatever looked tight. Aesop Rock's 'Skelethon', Grieves' 'Together / Apart' both have some really dope packaging imo. AESOP ROCK- SKELETHON / 2012 / RHYMESAYERS / EXPERIMENTAL HIP HOP, ABSTRACT HIP HOP, WEIRDO RAP THAT'S REALLY STRANGE, HOLY WOW CRAZY LYRICS 7/10 Y'all know this is just my opinion, right?

End of year lists eh?! I bet you’re sick and tired of them by now. Well, here’s one more for you. A non sequential list of highlights from my favourite albums of 2016 for your listening pleasure. The only rule I had was a song per artist. Enjoy and happy new year! Crippled Black Phoenix – Champions of Disturbance (Pts 1 & 2) (from Bronze) CBP rise once again with their unique brand of prog-hard rock-psych jamming and as always with CBP, their newest release this year had plenty of the dark excellence one would associate with the supergroup.

Run The Jewels – Talk To Me (from RTJ3) I could have picked any of multiple cuts from the mighty 3 which surprisingly dropped on Christmas Eve. But I have to go with the first single released via the fantastic Adult Swim Singles Club, the explosion of righteous anger that is Talk To Me. I think El-P sums up the sentiment of this track with his first bars of his verse: “Brave men didn’t die face down in the Vietnam muck so I could not style on you / I didn’t walk uphill both ways to the booth and back to not wild on you / You think baby Jesus killed Hitler just so I’d whisper?” YES EL. Pinegrove – Aphasia (from Cardinal) People are getting their knickers in a twist trying to pigeonhole Pinegrove’s sound for some reason. Are they country-emo? Does it really matter?

Aesop

They are a utterly magnificent band and that’s all that really matters. Aphasia is possibly their best song, a heartbreaking confessional about the singer’s issues with social anxiety which in a perfect world would be realised as the instant classic it is. Highly recommended. Frank Ocean – Ivy (from Blond) That opening line has such a disarming beauty. “I thought that I was dreaming, when you said you loved me”.

This is the first real introduction on the album to the emotional nakedness that runs through Blond and it’s a perfect follow up to the first song, the too-autotuned-for-its-own-good Nikes. It’s not surprising to hear that Jamie XX had a hand in the production of this track as the warm open chords and rhythmic melody are really reminiscent of his work both with his band and his acclaimed solo work. Julien Baker – Everybody Does (from Sprained Ankle) Another emotional humdinger from the queen of the troubled teens herself, Miss Julien Baker. What a striking voice and such a jaunty little tune to pair with a devastating, self lacerating lyric.

On an album of stand out tracks this has an anthemic quality that in a fair and just world would send her to stratospheric stardom. Heavily recommended. Rihanna – Consideration (from ANTI) On the first track on her latest album, the disjointed yet hugely enjoyable ANTI, RiRi really steps her game up to match one of the best production jobs she has been given. Dripping in Jamacian patois, it’s a self confidence masterclass. There’s so much to love in this sparse and powerful composition; the prowling hip hop beat, the synth bubbling away under the surface, the eerie male backing vocals all contribute to making it such a apt mood setter for the album to come. Christine & The Queens – Tilted (from Chaleur Humaine) One of the big hype songs of this year and rightfully so.

Yes yes, we all know the album is years old and the french version is better but who cares. One of the most intriguing live performers and one i’d love to see myself. Very possibly the song of the year. Whitney – Dave’s Song (from Light On The Lake) From one of the year’s very best albums this song is a real marvel. I got turned onto this band from a playlist put together by Ellie Roswell from Wolf Alice and i’m not surprised as she tends to have flawless taste. Light On The Lake is one of those rare releases where almost every song is a stunner but Dave’s Song is such a lovely, sun kissed gem i couldn’t help but add it to my list. At The Drive In – Governed by Contagions (from some album to come) Well, they’re back.

So there’s no real screaming but it’s certainly them and it’s very good. Roll on 2017 and a new album! Car Seat Headrest – Drunk Drivers / Killer Whales (from Teens of Denial) Best indie rock song of the last few years. Will Toledo really killed it with Teens of Denial and this tune has such an anthemic chorus that he can afford to spend over 3 minutes of build up before releasing it to mind-blowing effect. I slept on this album for waaaaay too long because I’m a silly sausage. A great song from one of the year’s very best albums.

Aesop Rock – Blood Sandwich (from The Impossible Kid) As a long time Ace Rock fan I was so pleased with The Impossible Kid. As a huge, huge fan of his last release Skelethon, I wasn’t sure if he could follow up what I considered his best work to date but by George he did and then some.

This album is a refinement of everything he does so well, and all of the tracks have a far more personal and emotional focus which just strengthen their impact and power. Blood Sandwhich is a kind hearted tribute to his brothers and works both as a demonstration of his verbose wordplay as well as his new qualities as a storyteller.

Mogwai – Ether (from Atomic) I think my favourite moment from the beautiful Atomic was made all the more powerful by seeing it on the big screen as it played over the documentary of the same name. Also I got to meet Barry from the band who was a complete gent. I’m not really sure how this marvel of a band continue to pump out quality work consistently but they really do keep nailing it after 20 years. Here’s to another 20. Bon Iver – 29 #STRAFFORD APTS (from 22, A Million) I mean come on, it’s Justin. Did you think he would do anything else other than release a new, beautiful piece of work that still cuts to the bone?

I could have picked almost any song again. Firstly I was obsessed with 33 God and 22 (OVER SOON). Then it was 8 (circle) and 715 – CREEKS. Now I cannot get this song out of my head. This album continues to slowly reveal all of it’s little beautiful flourishes over time and I’ve got my tickets to see him in Feburary and in June. Every Time I Die – It Remembers (from Low Teens) I’d probably get flak in some quarters from choosing ‘the slow song’ from the predictably uproarious Low Teens.

And that’s maybe fair but in my mind, everyone knows ETiD murders everyone at the fast and complex math-metal explosive material. That’s their bread and butter and I love them for it. But the tunes that really jingle my bells are the ones where they spread their wings and try some other things out. This song is a slow, lumbering southern rock influenced sludgy doom number featuring emo heartthrob Brendan Urie of Panic! At The Disco.

And it’s a complete belter. Throwing Snow – Paint By Numbers (from Axioms) It’s a shame how little attention Ross gets in the alternative electronic world. I stumbled on his stuff a few years ago and fell in love instantly – very reminiscent of acts ike Stumbeline and Four Tet. Since then he has been championed by the likes of Thom Yorke and Jamie XX so here’s hoping their audiences find him and start supporting his incredible output. His website describes this EP as ‘club-focused yet melody-soaked tracks that are “built for the summer, yet seen through a wintery prism’. Heavily recommended. James Blake – I Need a Forest Fire (feat Bon Iver) (from The Colour In Anything) WOO!

With a casual woop this track sprawls open and reveals such a funky and sexy side to J-Blake that perhaps hadn’t been apparent before. And it features JUSTIN VERNON. What else did you expect other than flawless perfection? A very strong song of the year candidate. Biffy Clyro – In The Name of The Wee Man (from Ellipsis Deluxe Version) The best track of their new album and they didn’t even include it on the main tracklisting. Madness. Margo Price – Hurtin’ On The Bottle (from Midwest Farmer’s Daughter) Like the very best country music, this tells a sad tale of pain and suffering while making you feel happy at the same time.

Margo Price has had a hard paper-round and with the help of Jack White and Third Man Records she is finally getting the recognition she clearly deserved. What a voice and what a woman. Deftones – Acid Hologram (from Gore) While Gore may be for me a somewhat underwhelming listen, Deftones are far too good a band to not have their weakest moments bury most of their competitors. This song is ‘Tones-by-numbers but Chino’s performance is so good and the band is so powerful it doesn’t really matter. Descendents – Victim of Me (from Hypercaffium Spazzinate) Take note Blink 182, this is how you do a pop punk comeback album. Sugary sweet with a kick, this is a mini pop masterpiece. Radiohead – Decks Dark (from A Moon Shaped Pool) Sultry, sexy and sophisticated, from an album that took the mechanical side of King of Limbs and mixed it with the sorely missed sensuality of In Rainbows.

There’s so much to love about this song. The scratchy rythym guitar.

The heavenly backing vocals. Phil’s drums.

The watery keys and Jonny’s magisterial guitar tone. A weird spectral cousin to OK Computer’s Subterranean Homesick Alien. NOFX – Six Years On Dope (from First Ditch Effort) NOFX really reached deep for their latest release. It’s been a long time since they were a hungry band or even one that required to write and release music. But their long and strange career has taken a lot of even stranger turns in the past few years and they are currently in one of their most relevant periods in their history. This tune is their explosive return and features incredible double team lyrics and an actual thought out and well constructed arrangement. Very good work form the old boys.

Frightened Rabbit – I Wish I Was Sober (from Painting of a Panic Attack) Lovely, lovely song. About as Frabbit as it gets but since when has that been a bad thing? Milk Teeth – Brickwork (from Vile Child) Loud and brash punk rock that i recently got put onto. High quality and recommended. Basia Bulat – Infamous (from Good Advice) At 2.06 in this perfect pop song Basia releases a full throated yodel that swells my heart every time I hear it. This lady is the superhero we all need. Metallica – Hardwired (from HardwiredTo Self Destruct) Great tune and the most Metallica-y they have sounded in a decade.

Album artwork is a piece of shit. Skepta – Shutdown (from Konnichiwa) I don’t need to talk about this one do I? “This aint a culture – it’s my religion”.

Skepta is everything good with music and I can’t wait to see the man live this summer. Red Fang – Flies (from Only Ghosts) One of the most overrated bands in heavy music finally released an album worthy of their hype and it’s a belter. Flies reminds me of ‘The Wolf is Loose’ by Mastodon which is a good thing.

In fact the whole album does. Maybe that’s why I like it so much. Man I need some new Mastodon. Martha – Goldman’s Detective Agency (from Blisters In The Pit of my Heart) Indie rock lives! Put this on, open a beer (something good, mind) and try to ignore the fact that the world isn’t all that nice these days. Martha will make you feel better.

James Vincent McMorrow – Rising Water (from We Move) I didn’t really listen to We Move at all this year. But the lead single from it was a constant in my playlists. What a sexy little number.

Touche Amore – New Halloween (from Stage Four) I wont go into detail about the story behind this album as it’s already been covered in detail elsewhere in a probably far better way than I could. In a year defined by death (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, David Bowie) this release for me is easily the most powerful listen of them all. Even if you don’t like hardcore or aggresive rock music, i would recommend a listen to Stage Four.

It’s unflinching in it’s treatment of grief. Father John Misty – Real Love Baby (from Real Love Baby single) I’m not sure if FJM is taking the piss with this song. He is the most post-modern, cynical and tongue in cheek artist out there. Yet this is a sweet, innocent song about true love. Whatever it is, it’s spectacular.

Wolf Alice – Ghoster (from The Ghostbusters Soundtrack) “I’VE GOT DEMONS IN MY HEAD.” This song is so so good and they chucked it onto the bloody Ghostbusters soundtrack. Reminiscent of a sweet mix of Garbage and L7, this is a huge, anthemic call to arms. Trap Them – Hellionaires (from Crown Feral) The sheer viscousness in this song and it’s parent album are totally invigorating. That alone would get Trap Them a decent following, but pair it with the magnificent songwriting and Kurt Ballou’s typically note perfect production and this is the heavy album of the year for me. This song is the ultimate party starter. The breakdown at 2.26 is unparalleled by any of the big gun metal albums released in 2016. Sheer audio battery.

Jacques Greene – Afterglow (from Afterglow single) If you liked Throwing Snow, listen to this. More of the same and just as good. John K Samson – 17th Street Treatment Centre (from Winter Wheat) Stunningly beautiful song from one of the year’s most under appreciated albums.

The former Propaghandi man’s solo release is what you would expect of him: literary references, emotional truth and that singular voice. Can’t recommend this one enough. The XX – On Hold (from On Hold single) It’s the XX. With a Hall and Oates sample. ‘ Heart eyes emoji‘. White Lung – Below (from Paradise) White Lung don’t really sound like a punk band anymore and that’s perfectly fine when they write songs this good. This song struck me on the very first listen and the album is more of the same.

This release got ignored in a lot of year end lists and it’s a real shame as it’s one of the very best. Dinosaur Jr – Be A Part (from Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not) Dino Jr in brokenhearted and pensive mood. J could write these in his sleep and they never get old. Solange – Cranes In The Sky (from A Seat At The Table) Providing a polar opposite vibe to her older sister’s more bombastic release this year, Solange Knowles released the sparse and soulful A Seat At The Table with less fanfare but in the end more acclaim. While Bey directed her anger out towards patriarchal society and her husband, Solange’s effort is far more introspective. The lead single is a gentle and graceful ode to getting on and dealing with things no matter how difficult that can be.

Bob Mould – Voices In My Head (from Patch The Sky) So glad I found this album as it’s a constant inspiration. Bob feels like he is full of wisdom and has come out of a hard life with his head screwed on.

Rock music needs more like him. Cloud Nothings – Modern Act (from Life Without Sound) This amazing band have picked up the baton where they left off with 2014’s excellent Here and Nowhere Else. Head honcho Dylan Baldi has always had a way with a indie rock composition but his songwriting has really blossomed over the past couple of full length releases. Modern Act has the best chorus of the year, a life-affirming admission of the confusion of life.

Weakened Friends – 95 (from Crushed) Jittery grunge rock with female vocals. Right up my street and yours too. Kanye West – Ultralight Beam (from The Life of Pablo) Long live Yeezy.

Everyone can mistakes and I hope we see him back to his best. TLOP was hugely disappointing but songs like this and Real Friends are what we need from him. The most prolific star in hip hop needs to take a little break and rediscover what his music represented in the beginning. The Hotelier – Piano Player (from Goodness) My favourite album of the first half of the year is a full hearted and clear eyed masterpiece.

Much like Pinegrove, The Hotelier are a rock band that have evolved into a force of nature and their style has moved beyond the classic emo sound into something more poetic and sophisticated. Hugely recommended. Hudson Mohawke – Shanghaied (from Watch Dogs 2 Soundtrack) HudMo continuing to kill it. Very impressive cut from his contribution to the Watch Dogs 2 game. And that’s it! Thanks to you if you made it through all of that.

Pleaze find all of these (and some more that didn’t make the cut) for your listening pleasure.

(for graffiti). I think the album is ok but it's yet to grow on me the way his other stuff has. I love royalty and camp to death so I was probably too hyped for BTI. Not saying it's bad but I just can't help but wish for more verses out of bino. I think my entire view is kinda wrapped up by 'the worst guys' it was my most anticipated track due to it having a chance feature; But he doesn't even have a verse! Now I've come around to like the song, but every listen i still think man I wish chance had a verse here. What I'm saying is I like the album, but I think overall it's slightly underwhelming.

I missed having a track like backpackers where he just fucking gives'er. That being said whatever he puts out next will be my most anticipated release once it gets announced and hey maybe BTI will finally click with me one of these days.
