California Drivers License Hole Punched
I'm from California and when i got my motorcycle license recently, they hole punched my ID on the expiration date and issued a temporary one til my new one arrived. I understand this is probably to make sure I don't give my old one out to others who can use it. I recently moved to Arizona for school and got a drivers license here to establish residency for tuition purposes.

I went to the DMV to get a new picture taken. My original license was not expired, just an old picture so wanted to update it. The lady punched a hole in my drivers license and gave it back. I tried to buy alcohol from the market but they said I could not, because the driver license is no longer valid since they punched a hole in it. I tried to explain to them that I just recently went to the DMV, and here is my interim license they issued. They still said no stating it was California law. I tried doing a Google search and I could not find any information on law/rules about that.

I always thought in conjunction with the old picture id, it would be accepted. I do not travel so I do not own a passport, nor do I have a California ID since I never needed one. Thank you for your reply. I'm not so much worried about buying alcohol in the stores. I'm more worried about not having my ID come in time. Considering NYE is right around the corner. Would definitely suck if I couldn't do anything, because no one would accept the interim and old license together.
I'm not finding any information on the California DMV site or anything at all stating it is California law. I get that the id is no longer valid. Its just mind boggling that they would make a valid ID, invalid and the interim license means absolutely nothing. It's likely their policy and not law.
Sometimes common sense can prevail as you'll run into a clerk that has been in the same situation and gets it. Likewise, if you were pulled over a cop isn't going to ticket you for driving without a license because they know what the hole punch represents. I had an instance at a Walmart where they wouldn't let me split an alcohol purchase with my friend with each of us using debit cards. We each wanted to split and pay half and I know people split payment between cards regularly; but the clerk said it was against the law.
It's not - many other stores have done it. It's their policy and that's okay.
I hope your get your ID in time for NYE celebrations! I find it a interesting that Nevada DMV actually answers this specific question, but CA DMV does not.
NV states: 'The interim document is not intended to be used as identification. If you had a previous driver’s license (DL), instruction permit, or ID card, our DMV technicians will invalidate it (punch a hole through the expiration date) and return it to you to keep with your interim document, still providing you with a form of identification with your photo. However, each business must decide if the interim document, along with your invalidated DL, instruction permit, or ID card, will be accepted for cashing checks, buying liquor, etc' I could at least show them this if this was for California.
Yeah, it's a bummer sometimes the way stuff works. (I'm not sure if they still do this, it was years ago) Wrigley Field in Chicago wouldn't honor ID's that reference when you turn 21 - even if you are 21 already for alcohol purchases.
So if you had your ID and turned 21, but the ID didn't expire until the year after so you didn't get a new ID. You could be in a situation where your ID says 'NOT 21 UNTIL.' And even though today is, the fact that your ID references it means they won't serve you alcohol. Yeah.I was bummed out at that Cubs game for reasons other than them sucking.
